About

About the Hermes II Project

The Hermes II Project is a privately-funded organization dedicated to
the task of upgrading and improving the Hermes II BBS program. 1999 was
Hermes’ 10th anniversary and saw the first TCP/IP version of Hermes II,
a new Java-based External Development System, and an exciting new
community based around the Hermes II Project website and the
telnet-savvy Olympus BBS. We have a number of development efforts
planned for the Hermes II program, some of which will begin to appear in
beta within the next few months! Our goal is to enrich the Hermes II
Product by increasing stability, improving the BBS core, and adding
Internet features to the product.

All of the software released by the Hermes II Project will be made available
under our CharityWare initiative. The goal of the CharityWare program is
to provide local and national charities with an additional source of revenue
by making commercial-quality software products available without charge. We
believe that the work we are doing with Hermes II is on-par with other
commercial products of its kind, but have decided to donate our work to the
public rather than receive an income stream for our efforts.

History

The first version of Hermes was written by Will Price in 1989. Since
then, a number of developers have worked on Hermes. Michael Alyn Miller
became the official maintainer and lead developer in 1998.
